His Holiness passed into parinirvana February 9, 2008 at 7:00 pm, the 3rd day of the 1st month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. As the sad news was first released, all of the Tibetan settlements in Dehra Dun, North India, stopped their Losar celebrations and began doing Mani Mantras (Chenrezig). Most of the shops in Dharamsala, H.P. closed immediately after hearing the news. After that, the traditional sacred ceremonies exclusive to His Holiness' Parinirvana, as well as the annually scheduled ceremonies continued and were attended by hundreds of Sangha in different shrine rooms throughout Mindrolling Monastery. Many have arrived to offer their respects.

All rituals according to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition were performed before placing the Kudung of His Holiness in a traditional reliquary. On the 10th day of the 1st month (Saturday, February 16th) at 10:00 am, H.H. Sakya Trizin's Khandro Dagmo Kushola and son, Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, and Ngor Luting Shab Drung Rinpoche, along with many other Teachers from different lineages, were in attendance to escort the Kudung to the main Mindrolling monastery shrine room. After the Kudung was positioned in the mandala and all traditional offerings were made, Rinpoches, Monks, and Nuns offered their respects.
Numerous dignitaries, monastics, and lay people from different countries as well as local community members and disciples from the West arrived to offer their respects to the Kudung. While holding khatas in their folded hands, they waited to offer their respects, supplications and aspirations. From 1:00 pm through late evening, the general public continued their offerings.
Throughout the entire 49 days of sacred ceremonies for His Holiness, worldwide dignitaries arrived daily to Mindrolling Monastery offering their condolences and respects. |
